The paint factory

This drawing shows four giant tanks connected to a pavilion where some mysterious process takes place, and from which paintings are produced. The written message plays with the ambiguity of the word «paint» in Castilian, which can refer both to the colourful liquid material used to paint, as well as to the final artistic product, which is the picture. This amphibology is crowned by observing the drawing of the tiny lorry, which is carrying objects that seem to be pictures, as they are too heterogeneous in their colours to be taken as huge barrels of liquid paint.

In a way, a liquid paint factory participates in the process of producing a picture, and perhaps it is not a trivial participation, for without paint there can be no painting. Humans had to invent paint first, at least by learning to manipulate coloured substances, before they were able to paint. The material conditions determine the spiritual ones, at least in this manner: without the necessary material means art cannot develop beyond the intimacy of one’s own mind; without paint we would only paint in our «imagination».
